How to Boost Your Cybersecurity with #NCSAM

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in the US. Here’s how you can use FileWave to empower best practices for better digital security in your organization.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), the 16th annual event focused on improving digital security best practices among individuals and organizations. We’ll share with you some best practices for helping your organization rally around the NCSAM 2019 theme of “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.”

Reinforcing Security with Automation & Visibility

The 2019 theme for NCSAM encourages personal responsibility for securing personal and business data (the “crown jewels,” as their marketing pushes), and this is in response to the fact that people are often the weakest link in cybersecurity. However, while human or process error represents the root cause of most data breaches, we also want to “change the tone” around cybersecurity and believe that education must be paired with systemic changes that eliminate the situations that make human error more prevalent.

How do we do this?

Visibility and automation are key to reinforcing better human behavior around data security. Let’s take a look at what this looks like for the NCSAM theme.

Own IT

Reinforce security best practice education with automation. Enforce device settings, password standards, and other configurations at the administrative level to be compliant with security and privacy standards, restrict application installations, and encourage self-serve applications as a means to combat Shadow IT.

Secure IT

Don’t just ask users to be more secure, enforce security standards for every user and device. Enable multi-factor authentication, enforce the use of strong passphrases, or take it one step further by providing a free license of a password manager solution available in your self-service kiosk.

Protect IT

Don’t leave it to end users to apply patches – they’ll simply ‘ignore’ every update to avoid impact on their productivity. Instead, remotely push updates and patches to devices automatically when a device checks-in or on-demand to address an urgent threat, with no need for end-user interaction. Distribute updates based on criteria you determine, with support for the timing and delivery of patches for distributed or complex networks. Reinforce the health of your applications with self-healing to ensure that critical security software stays where it needs to be.
