We'd like to deploy iBooks to students in our organization. Students have managed apple IDs assigned and their device is registered via serial number and associated with that account. We currently have the iOS App Store blocked, which is preventing them from accepting the VPP enrollment invitation when they try to download a deployed iBook.

Is there a way to automatically enroll a student device when they log into the iPad during setup? Is that something that can be pushed out via the MDM? Or, should we be assigning books through some other mechanism?

Every device that you want to deploy books to must have a VPP Client User ID associated with it and the user must accept the VPP invitation on the client device by entering their Apple ID. There’s 2 ways to send this VPP invitation: 1) via iOS itself and 2) via email.

You’ve indicated that #1 is impossible for you since you’ve disabled the App Store. It is possible to have the VPP Client User ID/Device association created automatically but only if devices are being enrolled interactively. This is not an option for DEP enrolled devices, which is what the majority of our customers are doing. To get to the setting to enable this go to the FileWave Admin prefs/settings and browse to VPP & DEP preferences tab > Configure tokens > Create VPP users for newly enrolled devices.

The other way is to send an invitation via email using the “Send invite url via email button” in the VPP User Management assistant window, assuming of course that your students have school email addresses and that you’ve entered their email addresses into the VPP User Management window.

Actually the key is "Managed Apple ID" - unfortunately there is no way for end users to link managed Apple IDs to VPP users.
Apple provides an API for MDM vendors to do it programmatically, and we are working on making this feature available in FileWave.

As a side note, it should be pretty straightforward for 1:1, but in Shared iPads context, while it will be also simple to associate vpp users to manage apple ids, we still have to propose the best way to have books licenses deployed that way - we're working on it.
