Hi,
Is there anyway to track iOS' location without iCloud. Meraki MDM can track device location, can I do this with FileWave?
And can I lock a device remotely when find my phone is off.

Thank in advance!

Hello,

Device tracking is a new feature coming with FileWave 10.1. I'm not sure I completely understand your question, "And can I lock a device remotely when find my phone is off." If your FileWave server is setup to communicate with your devices while they are off your network, you can control them the same way you do when they are on your network.

Regards,
Derek

Hi,

There is a Remote Wipe feature in FileWave for computers and mobile devices. There is also a Passcode Profile but it is intended to force your Users to setup a passcode. We are unable to pre-define a passcode and deploy that to a device.

Again, your FileWave server must have the communication open to the devices off of your network for this to happen.

Regards,
Derek

What we do for iOS device location lookups is in FileWave Device->Device Details and lookup up IP address.
If internal (for us 172.x.x.x) we copy and paste the device MAC eth0 address (also in same Device Details)
and lookup in our managed wireless.
If external IP I use an external site (such as whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup ) to get approx location. The difference in Meriki is that it has that built in mapping feature but that is very easily done in one more step.

We have configured Location services in our DEP Association profile so it should be enabled when we setup the device out of the box.
However, we don't necessarily sign into iCloud with an Apple ID on every iOS device we deploy.
Is this step necessary to utilize the location feature in FileWave 10.1.0 to allow you to track the device?

What are the implications of changing the state of a device in FileWave admin to Normal, Missing or Not tracked?
Is this for information purposes only?

We tried to configure GPS in file wave to track iPads but it does not work.
It seems there is something missing out with what we do. Are there steps someone has tried that works, this is very important for us to get done.

Thank you

Hello,

the steps required to get tracking to work for iOS devices are the following :

1) download and deploy the enterprise app version of the app portal - download the .ipa file from your filewave version's downloads page , add it in filewave admin , associate it to your clients and update the model.
2) set a test device to "normal" or "missing" state - update the model after that
3) open the app portal on your test device , turn on location services and grant the app portal access to location service data

After a few minutes, you should be able to see the location by right-clicking the device and choosing "Show Location(s)"

Small additional note: with supervised devices, iOS 9.3 and FileWave 11, "Missing" iPads will be able to report their location even without native app installed.

Not, it's not. But as Chris G. wrote, our native kiosk (10.1+) is mandatory, and the end user has to accept location tracking.

No, they have an impact:
- Not tracked will disable tracking.
- Normal: tracking is enabled
- Missing:
* for iOS devices, if they are running 9.3 and are supervised, they will be set in "Lost Mode" (i.e blocked, and can report their location without our native app portal) ;
* for Desktop devices, it changes slightly how Inventory data are reported ; a "normal" device will run all scanners (Fonts, Applications, Location...) and send the result once all of them are done (so there is only one call to the server). A "missing" device will run first the location scanner and report data to inventory immediately, and then run the other ones. This allows you to get location much quickly (and not have to wait 3 minutes so we gather all apps, fonts, or other less important data).
