Hello all,

Is it possible to update the iOS on iPads through Filewave? I have attempted to do this, but I cannot get it to work.

Thanks

Yes, but with a few (read: a lot of) limitations - limitations are on iOS side for now, not FileWave:

From Apple doc:

Only Supervised DEP-enrolled iOS devices and DEP-managed Macintosh computers are eligible for software update management. However, the AvailableOSUpdates query is available to non-DEP managed devices.

In clear: while any iOS device will report required OS updates, only DEP-enrolled supervised iOS devices supports OS upgrade via MDM ; on top of that, if the device has passcode, it's not possible to install an update - the reason is that updating the device requires access to the user-protected area, which is unlocked only if there is no passcode.

If you fulfill these requirements, in the Software Update assistant, you should be able to see iOS upgrades if any, then you can create fileset and / or deploy them automatically after approval.

The MDM protocol is unfortunately a bit limited regarding updates - we can just ask the device to download and/or install the update, but the device is still doing all the job. In case you would not be able to install updates even if you match requirements, I'd suggest to contact our support so you can raise our log level to see what's going wrong.

Hi,
Since iOS 10.3, Apple lowered requirements for OS updates - the only requirement is to have supervised devices.
However, there is a limitation for non-DEP devices - you can't force install the upgrade:
- user has to accept new Terms & Conditions
- user can defer the update, but device will continue to prompt
- device becomes more insistent about updating over time

Not related to DEP/non DEP, but with iOS 10.3 Apple removed the requirement to clear the passcode before upgrading from MDM.

Thanks for the answer.

In my country there is no DEP program :c/
So if I understand, I can now send an IOS upgrade from Filewave on non DEP devices and the users just have to accept it.
Is it right ?

As long as your devices are supervised and on iOS 10.3+, and you're running FileWave 12.2+, yes !
