I think it could also be useful to have an option to rename the target volume/HD before creating the image. Also, I like how System Image Utility actually creates the user accounts as part of the DMG. Is there anyway that a user account could be created in the asr.dmg rather than when using the Deploy command? I assume it is create at the end of the deploy process or on first boot. This sure looks like it will eventually be a very useful tool! Thanks!

Just to be sure, you are asking for:
  1. Rename the boot volume ('Bills HD' rather then 'Macintosh HD'?)
  2. Accounts (meaning more then one right?) be part of the DMG rather then part of deploy

I get that right?

Yes, that is exactly what I am asking. For the accounts, it can helpful if the account can be created as part of the DMG. The ability to create a specific account type is handy, too... not just an admin account. This might be asking for too much, but adding an account picture would be handy as well.

I created my first DMG last night and deployed it succesfully. I didn't add any custom packages, though. For a v1.0 tool, I was very impressed.

Take a look at CreateUserPkg on the Mac App store. Allows you to create user accounts and deploy them with packages. This would allow you to create a company wide admin user in the image, then create a end user account as you deploy the computer. i agree that adding a picture would be a nice addition to Lightning.

This might be exactly what I am looking for... I will try it out next week. Thank you very much!

I checked out that tool, but it is not what I am looking for. I would like the user account to be baked into the .dmg like how Apple's System Image Utility (SIU) does it. This tool creates the user account after the image has been deployed. Thanks anyway!

That is part of why I like to create images from built machines; that way I can get everything just the way I like it (including multiple user accounts) & then replicate that to new machines. I used to use this method such that the user account always had the same shortname & UID, and I simply changed the long name (& computer name in Sharing) to reflect the actual user. It made things much simpler.

That will certainly work in most situations, but it is not guarnateed. Creating a modular image from OS media (DVD or disk image) and whatever software packages you want to include (I usually use Composer to create the packages) is a much better way to ensure the resulting image will deploy to whatever your target hardware is.
