What's the likelihood that Lightning will gain the ability to generate ASR-ready images? With the demise of NetRestore, it would be nice to have a simple tool that can generate ASR-ready images from a built machine without having to do the two-step in Disk Utility.

Is this what you are looking for?

After you make an Imageset in Lightning.
Go to the "View" Menu and then "Reveal Library in Finder..."

In those folders are the image sets Lightning is using.

Thanks for the suggestions, but not really. I like to be able to hand build a template machine (so I can tweak settings like printers & individual system preferences, among other things), and I used to use NetRestore Helper to automate the generation of an ASR-ready image (it took care of lots of small things as part of the process). Unfortunately, it hasn't been supported/updated for years & now won't even run anymore (PPC code). Now I have to make an image using Disk Utility & then post-process that image (Scan Image for Restore). It's workable, but it would be nice to use Lightning for both types of imaging.

I hope that helps.

Is there an update on the implementation of this feature?

I'm interested in using this product to image a small fleet (25) of MacBook Airs. We're a school with limited tech funds. We bought the Airs without thunderbolt to ethernet adapters, and imaging over wifi is less than ideal with out infrastructure.

There have been quick mentions of Carbon Copy Cloner, or other means for doing this.

After discussions with Apple engineers, I understand there to be possible problems with simply "cloning" 24 copies of the same machine.

If I create my master image with CCC, and then deploy to my 25 machines using lightning. could I have these "cloning" network problems.

We aren't binding to Open Directory or Active Directory, but I do have some wireless networking issues in the school where these machines will be deployed. thanks

Hi,
The more a feature is requested the higher priority that feature is given in the development. I will add this to the requests for image creating.

Lightning also supports USB, eSATA, FireWire, Thunderbolt and SATA. If you can mount it, (fw) Lightning will try and image it. The newer MB Airs when first put into TDM (target disk mode) should show the Thunderbolt icon on the screen.
You are looking at either buying a lightning cable or the ethernet adapters for your imaging. And it all depends on what is on your master machine, but you said you aren't bound to a directrory. Maybe you have software that checks againse hardware changes (like some of the Adobe CS products).
(fw) Lightning is different then CCC in that it does copy bit for bit. I would try it out on two machines first, but I can't think of a reason why it would cause you issues.

ok, I want to make sure the request is clear. I'm looking for a button to be added to Lightning that creates a file from a thunderbolt / target booted machine, that file should then be able to be deployed by Lightning to numerous machines via thunderbolt.

the create image process right now is fine for single user, and apps deployments. I'm looking to take a computer, install all the apps I want, configure the machine exactly as I want, then use an app to 'pull' an image of that master, and then deploy that master to a lab of computers, so in the end of have 20 machines that are all exactly the same, (I will manually alter their local names / dns names.) but also don't have any of the possible network conflicts that one might see if you were to do this process with Carbon Copy Cloner.

DeployStudio, or Apple System Image Utility, or some workflows in Automator can do this... but I'm looking for something with the simplistic beauty of Filewave Lightning.

Thanks for your efforts and response.

Thank you so much, you are perfectly clear on your request.
I will add your comments to and elevate that particular feature request (.

If you know others who would start using Lightning if this would be a feature, please let us know. The more intrest on a feature the higher priority it is.

That is precisely the functionality that I am looking for. I used to be able to use NetRestore Helper to do this (& it would sort out the device specific settings like the ByHost preferences), but it hasn't been supported for several years.

Honestly I think there is a market for a this sort of feature / product in schools like here in Maine. the MLTI 1 to 1 initiative released their RFP recently. In the past Apple provided support for imaging macbooks via bootable USB thumb drives. the time to image was over 20 mins.
A feature / product like this, cutting deployment time down to 2-3 mins per machine would really help, especially where our time is becoming more valuable, due to budget cuts.

Yes, this would be a huge advantage to Tech support peaople such as myself, having to literally image hundreds of new MacBooks over this upcoming Xmas break!

You can do that now. build flat.pkg with these files from your master :

/Library/Application Support
/Library/Preferences
/Users/$HOME/Library/Application Support
/Users/$HOME/Library/Preferences

Install flat.pkg after .pkg to create user. Change "$HOME" to user name you created. Make sure your preferences are correct.

make bash script like this for any other tweaks.
#!/bin/bash
echo "System Will Require Restart for settings to take effect.
Enter password to continue or Close Terminal to quit.
	"
# Ask for the administrator password upfront
sudo -v

# Keep-alive: update existing `sudo` time stamp until `.dotTweaks` has finished
